Nadia Kowalski

Open Science Lead

she/her · at Ruqi since 2022

“Open source is a license. Open science is the harder promise: that someone with less money and less context can actually use what we make.”

Nadia runs Ruqi's open science program: licensing, data stewardship, reproducibility reviews, and the unglamorous work of making sure a released tool has an install guide that does not assume a postdoc is standing nearby.

She studied library and information science in Warsaw and spent years building open-data infrastructure for municipal governments. She joined Ruqi because the lab was willing to treat public access as a design constraint rather than an afterthought.

She chairs the lab's publication review, which checks every paper for data availability, code, and a plain-language summary. She also runs the annual Open Quantum Tools workshop and maintains the lab's documentation style guide.

Off the clock

Runs a monthly repair café, knits extremely loud sweaters, and reads more science fiction than is strictly necessary.

licensing, data stewardship, documentation, repair cafés.

Questions in the drawer

  1. What does 'reproducible' mean for an experiment that costs $40,000 a week to run?
  2. How should a nonprofit license hardware designs so that community labs can use them?
  3. Which documentation failures quietly exclude the people we say we want to include?
